Irenic Thoughts

Ecumenical Theology

The title comes from the words "Ecumenical" meaning originally "The whole inhabited earth" and "theology" meaning "words, things, or matters about God." It came to refer to the ways churches work to join back together. Last night, the King of Peace Ensemble sang at Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church. This was approproate as our Sunday music was a gift of that same church years ago in the persons of Linda, Freddie and Enree who today belong fully to both churches.

But last night an Episcopal group sang at a Roman Catholic Mass and the sermon included the story of a Catholic Priest (Father Leo serving in place of Father Gabe who has the flu) who, as a boy, thought he would be struck by lightning for stepping foot in a Protestant Church. He tested that teaching and came away not struck by lightning. We give thanks for our unique gifts as churches. We also give thanks for our unity in worshipping our one Lord through the power of the same spirit.

PS: Daylight Savings began last night. Remember to spring forward if you haven't already done so.

    Father Frank,

You gave an awesome sermon today! My son AJ had tears in his eyes.If you moved a middle shooler to tears, imagine what you did to the rest of us. Thanks for exposing your feelings like that! It meant a lot!

I found it amazing last night as we sat listening to Father Leo's sermon and realized that the music we had brought to sing, while the particular selection was not arranged ahead of time with him, was a perfect complement to his message on Jesus' amazing capacity for loving us (as opposed to the lightning bolt God many grew up fearing). It was a big, YES!, that we were supposed to be there.

    Debbie
