Don't do your good deeds publicly, to be admired....
But when you give to someone,
don't tell your left hand what your right hand is doing.
—Jesus, (Matthew 6:1,3)
Chuck Feeney became a billionaire in the duty free shop business. Then he gave away $600 million anonymously. As the Daily News wrote of the reclusive philanthropist,
Chuck Feeney is what Donald Trump would be if he lived his entire existence backward. The problem is that when someone starts putting two and two together, it looks fishy. Fenney had created a foundation and located it in Bermuda so as not to have to disclose giving. There were no applications to receive a grant, he just figured out where he wanted the money to go and gave it. So when someone started poking around, Feeney was forced to full financial disclosure to prove his foundation was on the up and up. The proof was there through tight accounting Price Waterhouse had done in secret for a quarter of a century. A recent NPR article stated the accounting firms statement disclosed of the,
$610 million paid out in 1,500 grants since 1982, $291 million had gone to higher education, $89 million to children and youth, $48 million to the nonprofit sector, and $23.5 million to aging and health. Another $148 million had been given to overseas charities. It was all verifiable and had all been done with the intent of the recipient never knowing who have given the money.
The NPR article also quotes Feeney himself about the joy he found in giving. He told of a recent trip to Vietnam, where his foundation supports the Virginia-based charity, Operation Smile, that gives free surgery to children with facial deformities. He said,
I watched a little girl cover her face up and leave her hands in front of her mouth. I saw that girl after surgery, and she was smiling...that's a great source of satisfaction.Feeney's goal is to give away his entire fortune before he dies.
for this man as he looked at him.
"You lack only one thing," he told him.
"Go and sell all you have and
give the money to the poor,
and you will have treasure in heaven.
Then come, follow me."
