Preparing for a Holy Lent
Tomorrow is Ash Wednesday and the beginning of Lent, the season of preparation for Easter. There is some information on Lent online at the King of Peace website here: Keeping a Holy Lent. Usually people talk about giving up something for Lent—eating chocolate, or meat, or drinking sodas. These can be helpful and healthful reminders of God's presence and I am not discouraging giving up something. But this year at King of Peace, we are emphasizing taking on something for Lent.
What could you take on that wouldn't overburden your schedule, but would make more room for God in your life? Could you add Bible reading, attending an additional worship service or a Bible study at church? And what could you add, that could continue after Easter? And to make room for this practice, what will you not do? Unlike giving up chocolate for Lent, this is a question of what will you let go of in your schedule to make more room for God?
One example is, "I am going to spend less time worrying over stuff so that I have the time to read Forward Day by Day and the Bible readings that go with it."
Now that would make for a Holy Lent.
Shrove Tuesday
Today is also known as Shrove Tuesday from the old word shrive, meaning "to forgive." People would go to a preist to be shriven of their sins prior to Lent. It is also known as "Mardi Gras" or "Fat Tuesday" as it was a time of using up ingredients not to be eaten in Lent. Tonight we will have a pancake supper starting at 6 p.m. and followed by a rousing round of bingo for prizes.
peace,
