Blest Are They

In tomorrow's Gospel reading Jesus is giving the Sermon on the Mount and in doing so declares,
  • Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
  • Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.
  • Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.
  • Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.
  • Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy.
  • Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.
  • Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. "Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
  • Blessed are you when people revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
Jim Forest writes,
Each of the beatitudes has to do with dying to self. Poverty of spirit, the foundation of the beatitudes, is the ongoing process of dying to self, not out of self-hatred or a collapse of self-esteem, but because there is no other way to love God and neighbor.
For those who came here in search of something completely different. Here is a scene from Monty Python's "Life of Brian" in which Jesus is misunderstood by those at the back of the large crowd:

Glad to see your use of that passage re the Beatitudes, which I see as succinct summary of the Gospel. The book the quote comes from may interest some of your blog readers: "The Ladder of the Beatitudes." Here is a web page about the book: http://incommunion.org/forest-flier/books/the-ladder-of-the-beatitudes/

    Hi the people of God.
During the my ample time to search for the gospel, I cam across my best passage and teaching of Jesus Christ in the bible. "The Beatitudes" has been my preaching, my interest, the kind of hope Jesus Christ gave to us His brothers and sisters still alive that we may find consolation. He knows our tribulations we go through.
I fully got encouraged while going through the verses. My life is ever leaning on this blessed teaching of Jesus Christ our Saviour.
May God open your eye to see more of such encouraging teachings of Christ.
    Be blessed.
